Cockroaches are a sanitation and health issue, and they don't resolve on their own.
German cockroaches reproduce fast enough that a small introduction becomes an infestation in a matter of months. They contaminate food surfaces, and their shed skins and droppings are a documented asthma trigger, particularly in children. Treatment is methodical rather than dramatic: identify the species, find the harborage, bait precisely, and verify with monitors.
What you're likely to notice first
Cockroaches are nocturnal and secretive. By the time they're visible in daylight, the population is usually well established.
- Roaches seen during the dayGerman cockroaches avoid light and open space. Daytime sightings generally mean harborage areas are overcrowded, which indicates a substantial population rather than a stray.
- Droppings resembling ground pepperSmall dark specks along the tops of cabinets, inside drawer runners, behind hinges, and in corners of pantry shelves. Larger species leave droppings closer to the size of a grain of rice.
- Egg cases (oothecae)Small brown capsules, roughly a quarter inch, tucked behind appliances, under counter lips, and in cabinet corners. Each German cockroach case can hold thirty or more eggs.
- A persistent musty odorEstablished populations produce an oily, musty smell that becomes noticeable in enclosed spaces like cabinets under a sink or a closed pantry.
- Activity near warmth and moistureRefrigerator and dishwasher motors, under sinks, behind the stove, around the coffee maker. Heat plus water plus a gap is the combination they're looking for.
- Smear marksIrregular dark marks along baseboards and beneath shelving in areas with high moisture, left where roaches travel repeatedly along the same route.
How a cockroach program runs
- Species identificationGerman, American, Oriental, and brown-banded cockroaches behave differently and live in different places. German cockroaches stay indoors near food and water; Oriental and American roaches often come from drains, crawl spaces, and sewer connections, which changes where we work.
- Locate harborageWe inspect appliance motor housings, cabinet voids, hinge recesses, under sinks, and behind trim. Population lives in the harborage, not in the open — that's where treatment has to land.
- Gel bait placementSmall, precisely placed dots inside voids and along travel routes. Bait is carried back and transferred through the population. We deliberately avoid spraying over bait, because repellents drive roaches away from the very thing meant to kill them.
- Growth regulators and monitorsAn insect growth regulator prevents nymphs from reaching reproductive maturity, which breaks the cycle. Sticky monitors in key locations give an objective read on whether numbers are falling.
- Correct the conditions and follow upDrain maintenance, gap sealing around plumbing penetrations, cardboard removal, and moisture correction. We return to read monitors and re-bait until counts reach zero.
For restaurants and food service
Our NY DEC 7F certification covers food processing and handling facilities, which means we can service commercial kitchens legally and correctly. A cockroach program in a restaurant is as much about documentation as treatment: service reports, a drain and moisture point log, monitor counts over time, and a written record showing the program is active and correcting. That record is what you hand an inspector. We build it as part of the service rather than as an afterthought.
Discretion for residential accounts
Nobody wants a marked truck sitting in the driveway announcing a cockroach problem to the neighborhood. Our vehicles carry the DEC-required business decals and nothing about the specific service being performed. We schedule around your day and we don't discuss your account with anyone else.
Why over-the-counter foggers make it worse
Total-release foggers are among the least effective options available for cockroaches and frequently make the situation harder to fix. The aerosol doesn't reach into the voids where roaches actually live, and the repellent effect pushes them deeper into wall cavities and into adjoining units in a duplex or apartment. Homeowners who have used foggers often present with a more dispersed, harder-to-reach population than they had before.
