Both swarm in spring and both damage wood, which is why they get confused constantly. Termite swarmers have straight antennae, a straight body with no pinched waist, and four wings of equal length. Carpenter ants have elbowed antennae, a clearly pinched waist, and unequal wing pairs. Termite galleries are packed with soil; carpenter ant galleries are smooth and clean, with coarse sawdust pushed out below. If you have swarmers, save a few — identification changes the entire treatment plan.

Eastern subterranean termites typically swarm from March through May on Long Island, usually on warm days after rain. Swarmers appearing indoors near windows or the foundation are the most common way homeowners discover an established colony.
